Online Nikah for Couples Living Apart
Online Nikah has become particularly useful where the bride and groom cannot conveniently be present at the same place.
One party may be in Pakistan while the other lives in the UAE, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Saudi Arabia or another country. In other cases, both parties may live abroad but require a properly documented Pakistani Nikah.
Online communication can facilitate the process, but the legal and Shariah requirements of the Nikah still matter.
Our dedicated Online Nikah Service in Pakistan explains:
- eligibility;
- documents;
- consent;
- witnesses;
- Ijab-o-Qubul;
- Haq Mehr;
- Vakil arrangements;
- Nikah Nama;
- registration; and
- overseas procedures.
Court Marriage Services in Pakistan
“Court Marriage” is a commonly used expression in Pakistan for a marriage undertaken by legally eligible consenting adults who want their Nikah and related documentation completed through a proper legal process.
For Muslim couples, the process still involves a valid Nikah and marriage registration rather than simply obtaining a paper from a Court.
Our Court Marriage services can include:
- preliminary legal guidance;
- identity-document review;
- required declarations or supporting documents;
- Nikah arrangements;
- Nikah Khawan;
- witnesses where appropriate;
- Nikah Nama;
- registration; and
- subsequent Marriage Registration Certificate assistance.
Couples should understand their documents before signing them and should never be asked to make an incorrect declaration regarding age, marital status or identity.
Online Nikah vs Court Marriage vs Traditional Nikah
Issue | Online Nikah | Court Marriage | Traditional Nikah |
Main purpose | Marriage where parties may be apart | Legally documented marriage for consenting adults | Conventional family/venue Nikah |
Parties in same place? | Not necessarily | Usually, depending on arrangement | Usually |
Overseas suitability | Excellent | Possible depending upon circumstances | Often requires travel |
Vakil may be used | Yes | Where appropriate | Yes |
Witnesses | Required as applicable | Required | Required |

The correct option depends upon the couple’s actual circumstances rather than the label used for the marriage.
Nikah Khawan & Qazi Services
A Nikah Khawan performs an important role in the solemnisation of a Muslim marriage.
Nikah House provides Nikah Khawan / Imam / Qazi-related services for:
- Online Nikah;
- Court Marriage;
- Nikah at home;
- Nikah at a wedding venue;
- mosque Nikah;
- small private ceremonies; and
- other lawful Nikah arrangements.
A properly managed Nikah should address:
- identity of the bride and groom;
- free consent;
- witnesses;
- Ijab-o-Qubul;
- Haq Mehr;
- Nikah Nama particulars; and
- subsequent registration.
Nikah Nama Preparation & Registration
The Nikah Nama is not merely a ceremonial form.
It is an important marriage document containing legal and contractual information about the spouses and their marriage.
Important entries include:
- full particulars of bride and groom;
- ages and identity information;
- addresses;
- marital status;
- date and place of Nikah;
- representatives/Vakils where applicable;
- witnesses;
- Haq Mehr;
- prompt and deferred dower;
- special marriage conditions where lawfully agreed;
- delegated right of divorce where applicable; and
- signatures and registration particulars.
Incorrect or casually completed Nikah Nama entries can create serious disputes years later.
Our team can assist with proper preparation, review and registration of the Nikah Nama.
Nikah Nama vs Marriage Registration Certificate
These documents serve different purposes.
Nikah Nama | Marriage Registration Certificate |
Original Muslim marriage document | Computerised civil-registration certificate |
Records detailed marriage terms | Records registered marital particulars |
Contains Haq Mehr | Usually summarises marriage information |
Contains witnesses and Nikah details | Used extensively for official purposes |
Completed around the time of Nikah | Obtained after registration |
Important legal record | Important administrative record |
May be required for litigation | Often required for immigration and official use |
Couples may need both documents for immigration, visa, embassy, inheritance or other official purposes.
Marriage Registration in Pakistan
A valid Nikah should not be left undocumented.
Under section 5 of the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance, 1961, every marriage solemnised under Muslim law is required to be registered. The law provides for licensed Nikah Registrars and also requires marriages solemnised by another competent person to be reported for registration.
For this reason, Nikah House distinguishes between:
solemnising the Nikah
and
completing the legal registration process.
The marriage process should not end merely because the ceremony has taken place.
Computerised Marriage Registration Certificate
After registration of the Nikah, couples may require a computerised Marriage Registration Certificate, commonly referred to by the public as a NADRA Marriage Certificate.
This document is frequently required for:
- spouse visas;
- immigration;
- foreign residence;
- passport matters;
- embassy applications;
- official change of marital status;
- inheritance;
- family benefits; and
- other administrative purposes.
Our existing certificate page will remain at its indexed URL and will be rebuilt as a dedicated Marriage Registration Certificate money page.
Nikah Services for Overseas Pakistanis
Nikah House assists Pakistanis living overseas who want to marry in Pakistan or arrange a Pakistani Muslim marriage while remaining abroad.
Common situations include:
Groom Abroad, Bride in Pakistan
A properly structured Nikah may be arranged where the groom cannot travel immediately.
Bride Abroad, Groom in Pakistan
The bride’s location and required authority can be reviewed before the Nikah is scheduled.
Both Parties Abroad
Pakistani couples living overseas may require Nikah documentation for Pakistan as well as their country of residence.
Pakistani & Foreign National Marriage
Additional identity, nationality, immigration and marital-status documents may have to be considered.
What We Check Before an Overseas Nikah
Question | Why It Matters |
Where is the bride currently residing? | Affects documentation and participation |
Where is the groom residing? | Determines practical arrangements |
Are both Pakistani citizens? | Identity-document requirements differ |
Is one person a foreign national? | Additional documents may be necessary |
Was either person previously married? | Divorce/death documents may be needed |
Can both personally participate? | Determines whether representation is required |
Where will the certificate be used? | Foreign authority requirements differ |
Is attestation required? | Depends upon destination country |
Is translation required? | Depends upon receiving authority |
Nikah Through Vakil or Authorised Representative
Representation through a Vakil can be particularly useful where one party is unable to attend personally.
The authority should be prepared for the actual marriage rather than copied from an unrelated general Power of Attorney.
Depending upon the circumstances, the document may identify:
- proposed bride or groom;
- authorised Vakil;
- authority to represent the principal for Nikah;
- marriage particulars;
- Haq Mehr or authorised terms; and
- other relevant instructions.
Proper documentation can become particularly important where the Nikah will later be used for immigration or official purposes abroad.
Marriage Documents for Foreign Use
Marriage documents issued in Pakistan may require additional processing before being accepted by a foreign authority.
Depending upon the destination and purpose, this may involve:
- certified copies;
- computerised Marriage Registration Certificate;
- Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation;
- embassy or consular attestation;
- certified translation; or
- other country-specific formalities.
The requirements of a spouse-visa authority in the UK, UAE or another country should not automatically be assumed to be identical.

Not sure which applies?
Legal Eligibility Before Nikah
Marriage eligibility should be checked before a ceremony is scheduled.
Important issues may include:
- age under the law applicable to the parties;
- free consent;
- identity;
- existing marital status;
- prior Divorce or Khula;
- widowhood;
- relationship prohibited by law or Shariah;
- nationality;
- existing marriage of the groom;
- and any legal requirement arising from the parties’ particular circumstances.
Nikah House should not arrange or document a marriage that violates the applicable minimum-age or other mandatory legal requirements.
Previous Marriage, Divorce or Widowhood
Where either prospective spouse has previously been married, the relevant marital-status documents should be reviewed.
Depending upon the circumstances, these may include:
- Divorce Registration Certificate;
- Talaq documentation;
- Khula decree;
- marriage dissolution record; or
- death certificate of the former spouse.
A person’s current marital status should be established accurately before the new Nikah documentation is prepared.
Haq Mehr: An Important Part of the Nikah
Haq Mehr is a legal and matrimonial right of the wife and should not be treated as a blank space on the Nikah Nama.
The parties should clearly consider:
- amount or property forming Haq Mehr;
- prompt dower;
- deferred dower;
- method of payment; and
- any relevant agreed terms.
Careful drafting can prevent future disagreement about what was actually promised.
